Complete Guide to Grade 9 in South Africa

14-15 years old — Senior Phase

Grade 9 is the final year of compulsory schooling and the year learners make crucial subject choices for Grade 10. This guide covers the subject choice process, curriculum content, and how to prepare for the FET Phase.

What Your Child Will Learn

Grade 9 consolidates all Senior Phase content. Mathematics covers factorisation, functions, Euclidean geometry, and probability. English includes advanced literature analysis, longer essays, and editing skills. All subjects reach their highest Senior Phase level, preparing learners for the specialisation of the FET Phase.

Subject Choices for Grade 10

This is the most consequential decision of Grade 9. Learners choose 7 subjects: 4 compulsory (Home Language, First Additional Language, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation) and 3 electives from options like Physical Sciences, Accounting, Business Studies, History, Geography, and others. Research career requirements before choosing — many university courses require Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy) and specific electives.

Mathematics vs Mathematical Literacy

This is often the most debated choice. Mathematics is required for engineering, medicine, actuarial science, IT, and most science degrees. Mathematical Literacy is acceptable for teaching, law, journalism, social work, and many business degrees. If your child is performing above 50% in Grade 9 Maths, they should strongly consider taking Mathematics in Grade 10. A solid foundation now makes the choice clearer.

How to Support Your Grade 9 Child

Help your child research career options and the subjects required for them. Attend the school's subject choice evening. Talk to university admissions offices about minimum requirements. Encourage your child to choose subjects they enjoy AND that keep doors open. Do not let them drop Mathematics purely because it is difficult — with support (like iRainbow video lessons), many learners improve significantly.

Common Parent Questions About Grade 9

Subject choices are typically made during Term 3 of Grade 9 (around August-September). Schools hold information evenings where teachers explain each subject. Some schools use June exam results to guide recommendations. Start discussions early — do not leave this decision to the last minute.

Some schools allow changes at the end of Grade 10, but this is increasingly difficult. Changing from Mathematical Literacy back to Mathematics is especially challenging because the Grade 10 Mathematics curriculum is very demanding. It is much better to make the right choice initially and seek additional support if needed.

Not every child needs to go to university, and there are excellent alternatives including TVET colleges, learnerships, and apprenticeships. However, keeping subject options open is still wise — your child may change their mind later. Even vocational paths often prefer learners with Mathematics over Mathematical Literacy.
